LET’S SHELL-EBRATE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

June 8th marks World Oceans Day, a global opportunity to make a difference to our blue planet whilst raising awareness of our sea-saving efforts.

For 2020, this year’s theme for World Oceans Day focuses on the 30x30 campaign – a growing global movement to protect 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030.

Here at Barry M, we have been making waves to celebrate our planet and strive towards an eco-friendlier future of beauty in honour of World Oceans Day. With over 13 million tonnes of plastic dumped in the ocean each year as a result of human activity, this is causing an ever-growing issue of marine plastic pollution that needs to be acted upon fast.

However, small changes can make a big difference, which is why at Barry M we have already taken a deep dive, proving our dedication to protecting the beauty of the world that surrounds us whilst looking good doing it!

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
All boxes, bags and bubble wrap used for our online orders are made from recycled materials, which are 100% recyclable! We are working hard to be as environmentally friendly as possible and to cut out single use plastics, reduce waste and introduce greener product ranges – watch this space!

THE STORY BEHIND WORLD OCEANS DAY

For centuries, people thought that the oceans were limitless and immune to human activity. It’s only recently that scientists have come to understand the devastating effects we’ve already had on our seas.

Waste

With such an incredible amount of waste taking over our oceans, we are witnessing an unprecedented pollution crisis. Rubbish is being eaten by marine life and has entered every level of the food chain — even ending up in the seafood we eat.

Overfishing and Destructive Fishing

Global fish populations — a critical source of food for millions of people — are in danger of collapsing due to widespread and destructive fishing practices.

Currently, there is very little protection for our threatened marine life and dwindling fish stocks — with less than two percent of our oceans set aside as marine reserves (that’s why the 30x30 initiative is so important), it has become all too easy for our natural resources to be exploited from lack of protection.

Time to Act

The time to act is now! The threats that pollution and overfishing pose to the health of our oceans is clear for everyone to see — without the right protection and corporate responsibility, we face damaging some of the most important food sources in the world.

But we can make a difference and, working together, we will!
